With college graduation looming, three childhood friends vow to make spring break their last blast of pure fun. But at least one of them didn’t count on such incredible heat…Layla Sharpe is definitely more math ninja than bikini babe, and her future has been calculated with razor precision. Convinced to let loose over spring break, Layla is finally ready to party—until her car breaks down halfway to her destination, leaving her stranded in Georgia with a mouthwateringly hot pool shark. She knows more than enough about angles to learn the game, but this week she wants him to appreciate her curves…Phin Marks has never met a girl like Layla. She’s more Star Wars geek than seductress, and when he offers her a place to stay while her car is in the shop, he’s counting on the attraction between them to set the nights ablaze, no strings attached. But every moment he spends with Layla makes it harder to let her go. Can he persuade her to gamble in the most dangerous way possible…on forever?
I received an Advanced Reader Copy of this story from NetGalley for an honest review.
If you’re looking for a fast-paced super fun summer romance, look no further than Her Best Shot. I jumped into this story and could not put it down. Enjoyable characters and a sweet romance that kicks up the heat when appropriate make it super easy for me to recommend this story.
With graduation from MIT looming and a job offer from NSA in hand, Layla Sharpe’s planned future is becoming uncomfortably real. A spur of the moment decision to go on a Spring Break road-trip with her BFF’s Charlie and Felicity seems likes the perfect way to blow off some steam, until Layla's car gives out on her and leaves her stranded. Enter one charming pool shark offering to save the day…
A former gypsy, Phineas ‘Phin’ Marks has no ties and likes to keep it that way. There’s just something about the hot girl in the nerdy math t-shirt that makes him want to play the hero. When sparks fly between the two leading to a night of passion, Phin is shocked to find himself wanting more. But how could a guy with nothing to his name win a girl with such a bright future?
What I Loved: I have never read Shannyn Schroeder before but after devouring Her Best Shot, I guarantee I’ll be reading more of her work in the future. Schroeder gives Layla and Phin clear and distinct POV’s. Also, as a self-proclaimed nerdy girl how could I not love a heroine like Layla? Layla is smart, independent, and owns the decisions she makes. I would love to see more books with heroines like her.
What I Didn’t Love: The only small nitpick I have about Her Best Shot is its length. The story is a little on the short side and it may be greedy of me as a reader, but I would have loved a little bit more background on Layla and Phin.
“She felt free with Phin. She didn’t have to pretend or… She could just be herself.”
“How he managed to convey so much with just a kiss startled her. He wanted her to stay.”
“He liked her hot and frenzied, angry, or laughing. Anything but indifferent.”
“Kissing Phin was like coming home after her first semester at college. Comfortable and exciting because she’d become a different person.”
I highly recommend adding Her Best Shot to your TBR list. So unbelievably fun and easy, I'm already eager for more. Fortunately The Hot & Nerdy Trilogy will continue with Her Perfect Game (Charlie’s story) and Her Winning Formula (Felicity’s story).
