Two people from completely different worlds are about to be thrown together...
In more ways than one.
She wants to keep her scholarship. He wants to stay on the team. An awkward alliance
doesn’t even begin to cover Rimmel and Romeo’s relationship.
But that’s about to change.
It starts with a dare. An initiation. A challenge.
Quickly, it turns into more. But when you’re a victim of your status, there is no room for
anything real. The rules are clear and simple.
Stick to your circle.
And never fall in love with anyone on the outside.
I received a copy of this story for an honest review.
On occasion I will find a book that when I start reading it, it grabs me by the face and says "Look, I know you have things like a husband, a kid, and job but let's be honest - you're not going anywhere until you finish me. So... let's do this thing." That was #NERD. Completely original, #NERD captured me completely by balancing the brutal angst of young love battling social pressure with the hilarity of a social media gossip hound. Plain and simple - #NERD is a fantastic read that I absolutely loved it.
Countless hours of studying and volunteering at the local animal shelter have kept Rimmel Hudson from registering on the social radar of Alpha University. Being a social ghost never bothered Rimmel until she's forced to tutor Alpha's man around campus Romeo Anderson. Alpha's football star and notorious ladies man frustrates Rimmel beyond belief. Romeo is Rimmel's total opposite and everything she should steer clear of. If only she could ignore the electricity she feels when he's near.
Roman 'Romeo' Anderson is going to do whatever it takes to make it to the NFL. If that means enduring mandatory tutoring with a klutzy nerd and rushing a prestigious but grating frat, so be it. But Rimmel's innocence calls to Romeo and does the unthinkable, it makes Romeo question himself and what he really wants. No more so than when he gets his frat initiation challenge - do the nerd and get a picture. Can Romeo treat Rimmel like every other girl on campus and get the easy score or risk his football dreams for an unexpected but meaningful relationship?
Cambria Hebert has crafted something unique and beautiful in #NERD. Rimmel and Romeo are achingly real. Theirs is no insta-love and it adds an innocent sweetness to the overall story. What really hooked me beyond Rimmel and Romance was the BuzzFeed notifications from the Alpha U BuzzBoss that Hebert introduces each chapter with. This social media Greek chorus injected #NERD with perfect amounts of humor and gave a unique outside perspective on Rimmel and Romeo's budding romance. I loved reading the little status updates and even went back after finishing the story to reread them.
“I was into her and it was creating some kind of war inside me. A war between the guy I was and the guy everyone wanted me to be. It never used to be a competition. I was happy to be that guy.”
“I was no longer the #nerd with no friends. He was no longer the popular jock with a million conquests under his belt. I was just a girl. He was just a guy.”
“He was the reason I was crying, but he was here. He’d come here because maybe he knew just how bad I hurt.”
“I love you in spite of yourself, Rim. Can’t you love me in spite of myself”
#NERD is a read I won't forget any time soon and I highly encourage you to check it out. Romeo and Rimmel’s love story will continue Winter 2015 in #HATER. It’s going to be long year but I will be waiting and ready with grabby hands to find out what’s next for this couple.
