*New Release & Review* Safe At Last (Slow Burn #3) by Maya Banks

The third book in the beloved #1 bestselling author’s sexy, romantic suspense Slow Burn series…
They say young love doesn’t last, but a girl from the wrong side of the tracks with unique abilities and the hometown golden boy were determined to defy the odds. For Zack Covington, Anna-Grace—his “Gracie”—was the one. Until one night forever alters the course of their future, when a devastated Gracie disappears without a trace, leaving Zack to agonize over what happened to the girl he loved. As the years pass, his desperate efforts to find her uncovered nothing.
Now working for Devereaux Security, he stumbles across a painting featuring a special place only he and Gracie would know. The image is too perfectly rendered for it to be coincidence. His Gracie must be alive. When he finally tracks her down, he is shocked—and heart-broken—to discover the wounded shell of the girl he once knew and still loves. Her psychic gifts are gone, and worse, she believes he betrayed her all those years ago.
Zack has enemies, and once his weakness is discovered, Gracie becomes a target for revenge. He’ll have to save her before he can earn her trust and her love. And he vows they’ll never be torn apart again.

I received an advanced copy of this story for an honest review.
Lost first loves dealing with horrific past tragedy, a looming menace threatening their future and the security of those around them - Safe At Last comes of the gate swinging and doesn't let up until the very last page. If you're already a fan of the Slow Burn series you'll be excited about the latest installment. If you're new to the series Safe At Last may just be the book to get you to give the series a chance.
Deveraux Security Agent Zack Covington has made of career of keeping people safe but every person he saves cannot resurrect the one soul seemingly lost to him forever, his first love Gracie. When Gracie disappeared without a trace a piece of Zack died. Just as he vows to start over and leave the past in the past, Zack stumbles across a painting of a spot that only he and his girl would know. As Zack confronts the girl he lost he realizes that the woman in her place is haunted with brutal ghosts. Can Zack find out the truth of what happened to his true love or will a new villain take her before all questions can be answered?
What I Loved: Once I jumped into Safe At Last I couldn't put it down. In turns a heartbreaking tale of overcoming life altering loss and also an edge of your seat thriller, Safe At Last is a rarity that I'm not 100% sure how to categorize. And oddly, I'm really ok with that. Not all good stories need to fit in neat little packages. Told from both Zack and Gracie's perspectives, the story builds a slow creep of dread into a full on panic that had me reading through my fingers in the final chapters. I love a story that can keep me guessing and keep my blood pumping.
What I Didn't Love: The Slow Burn books are more thriller than romance so please don't go into the story expecting insta-love and tons of bedroom shenanigans. There is a lot of dark in Safe At Last and I think a few more scenes of Zack and his Gracie getting to rediscover happiness and each other would have provided a little more balance to the overall heaviness of the story.
Favorite Quotes:
"Maybe forgiveness wasn't for the person who'd committed a sin against her. Perhaps forgiveness was really for her, enabling her to move on, free of the weight and oppression so many years of anger had caused."
"You holding me up. Never letting me fall. Always protecting me from the world."
"My heart, soul, body, and mind. I never gave to anyone else what was yours to keep."
Overall I think fans of romantic suspense will really enjoy Safe At Last. I know I did.
The Slow Burn series will continue with book four focusing on tough as nails operative Eliza, who played a very important role in Safe At Last. Eliza has a fire and edge to her that has me eager to see what's in store for her next.
Happy reading.
